Metacam expiry: my dog just got spayed and the clinic does not believe in pain medicine after the first day. ?
I want to give her some metacam, which is what they gave her also, i have some from feb, the bottle says expires 2 months after they gave it to me, all the sites on the net says it lasts 6 months?
i totally get this concept of no meds ,because dogs will run around and injure themselves internally if they don’t feel pain to slow them down. but my dog is a shih tzu and sleeps all day. besides i am crating her for the next 7 days when i am not home. , with e-collar on her.

as for the meds. the vet had to order the dose from the drug store, so i had to wait for it. but i don’t know if it was sitting on the shelf for 4 months, maybe, but i like what you said about if they gave her an injection or pills etc. . i don’t know. so with that, i will not use it. thank you
handysgal, yea agree, i don’t know why i have to follow their beliefs. i am going to ask my vet if she would benefit from some pain killers

There are a few things to consider here that random people on the internet have no clue about.
1) What are your dog’s blood chemistry values? Metacam and other NSAIDs require good liver and kidney function in order to be processed by the body. If your dog’s liver and kidneys are not in top condition, giving NSAIDs can cause liver and/or kidney damage or even failure. Because of this, many vets prefer to take a conservative approach to pain control medications and use them only when necessary.
2) How much pain medications did she get with her surgery and when were they given? Several recent studies have proven that dogs who receive pain medications before surgery, prior to when their nerves actually experience pain, do not require as much pain mediation and have much faster recovery times than dogs who do not receive any pain medication until after the surgery is over. And again, anything your vet would have given her for pain would most likely have to be processed by the liver and/or kidneys and could have a longer-lasting effect than most owners realize (for example, carprofen (rimadyl) is available in both an oral and an injection and while the oral form of this NSAID can be safely given every 8-12 hours the injection lasts up to 36 hours and should not be repeated frequently).
3) Metacam may be good for up to 6 months, but what is the actual expiration date for the bottle your vet gave you? If they go through this medication very quickly and are constantly getting new stock in then it is probably good for longer than 2 months. But if the medication was on back order or if it is something they don’t script out very often then it may have been sitting on their shelf for several months before you got it and it may not be good anymore.

I would tell them they have the right to believe what ever they want but I am paying for it and I want the pain meds. As long as you crate , like you said, and say with her while shes out a little pain med for a day wouldn’t hurt. Watch the dosage and the dog it should be fine for some pain relief. I got our chi spayed and she got pain med for the first twenty four hours. Jo

I would ask how do you know she sleeps all day when you or other people are not there? A dog can certainly struggle in a crate if they don’t like being alone. Some pain meds can cause stimulation but Metacam is an antinflammatory med and does not cause sedation so this would not calm her so if she does not like being alone she might feel less pain a struggle more.
