Hoodia Gordonii is a humble cactus like plant, which recently came into the limelight as its amazing properties, known to the Bushmen in southern Africa for centuries, have finally grabbed the attention of the West.
As I’m sure you know, the diet industry is over forty billion dollars a year, and everyone is looking for the “next big thing” – in this case Hoodia Gordonii.
The Kalahari Desert in Africa is, as you can imagine, not a very hospitable place. Food and water is scarce and sometimes you would have to travel days to find something to eat. The human body needs regular food and water, and when he gets hungry, will be slower and weaker.
The Bushmen of the Kalahari discover a succulent plant, known to us as Hoodia Gordonii. As they chewed on the plant, they discovered that they get along for days without food and remain lively and energetic.
Hoodia looks like a cactus but is actually a succulent plant. It is often called “African Hoodia cactus, which is a misnomer. To technical for a moment, is from the genus Hoodia trichocaulon and his family name is Asclepiadaceae. Hoodia is a very impressive plant and can grow slightly over six feet high.
The Bushmen were using Hoodia for centuries and it was not until 1960 that research began Hoodia as an appetite suppressant. It took thirty years for the specific appetite suppressing ingredient in laboratories to isolate, which was given the designation P57 and admitted to a British company named Phytopharm drug.
It was not until the end of the year 2001 ($ 20,000,000 and later), the P57 its first clinical trials. The studies proved a success and people who took P57, extracted from Hoodia Gordonii, a thousand calories less per day ate! And even better than that – there were no side effects.
In fact, the P57 looked so promising as a diet drug that the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer bought the worldwide marketing rights for a massive $ 32,000,000!
Phytopharm has a contract with a company called Unilever, the extra use Hoodia in its diet Foods – so will some of 2008 you will be able to suppress by diet with Hoodia food in it to satisfy your appetite.
The downside of this of course is that Phytopharm every last Hoodia plant in the Kalahari purchases to meet the demand. This means that if you were anxious to jump the queue and buy yourself fresh Hoodia you might struggle to find some.
The other interesting development in the story is that Phytopharm Hoodia Gordonii as a patent on Hoodia weight loss product despite the fact the Bushmen have used for centuries. But this means that no one else can sell hoodia as a weight loss product.
Unfortunately, it looks like a magic pill to Hoodia Gordonii is based, should not happen – the P57 molecule is to synthesize not simply cost-effective.
