Is sleep apnea as a pre-existing condition that is not insured by Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield?
I am considering switching insurance from Open Enrollment to CareFirst by the Emperor. I have sleep apnea and am on a CPAP machine. Is this as a pre-existing condition which would not be recovered, or can it be transferred to the new insurance as a durable medical equipment? I am waiting for a response from CareFirst, but must make a decision next week.

The only time you should be penalized for a pre-existing condition is if their is a gap in your coverage. If there’s a period in between switching ins where you do NOT have coverage then yes sleep apnea is a pre- existing diagnosis. Most of the time you will have to provide documentation to your new isns company that you have not had a gap in coverage.

Loaded question. Yes, it’s a pre-existing condition, but seeing as how you’re switching from one employer group to another, the new carrier cannot exclude coverage for it.
