Is blood work required every six months for dogs on phenylpropanolamine for incontinence?
We have a new vet who insists that blood work is required every six months for prescription of this drug. I can’t find any evidence that is true looking around online, and no one else I know whose dog has been on this medication required regular bloodwork. This is a new vet, and I’m suspicious that some of their policies are geared more toward profitability than health.
You only need blood work once a year. Unless the dog is “going down hill” medically and it’s health changes between refills, you shouldn’t need to do blood work that often. Also, you should be able to sign a waiver saying you understand the risks, but you just want a refill. This is the standard policy at the vet where I work, and we care for pets with many chronic conditions. If the owner thinks the animal’s health has not changed, we don’t require anything else for refills. I think you should look for another vet.
