How to explain Dyslexia to a child?
I just had my daughter tested by a psychologist and the results of the testing is that she has dyslexia. She is 9 and I’m not sure how to explain dyslexia to her? Any advice?

I told my step-daughter (who was 8 when I married her dad) that it was “seeing most thing backwards”. A lot of people who have dyslexia “outgrow” it by learning to reverse everything automatically.
The one thing that is hard for life for someone with dyslexia is they don’t enjoy reading and/or have trouble reading almost everything. Recorded books are the solution for this, if you want to “read” for pleasure. The library has recorded books to check out, or you can join a book club and receive them in the mail.

Tell her that she is a very talented young lady and that lots of extremely bright people have been dyslexic including Albert Einstein. Tell her it is just that her brain thinks in a different way from other people’s and that she sometimes sees thing in a different way, which might at times make it hard for her to catch on to meanings of sentences and words right away. Tell her that her brain will eventually see these differences with work–to some children b, p, d, and q all look like the same letter. For my son all the round vowels e o a looked the same. Sometimes she will see reversals of letters and sometimes she will see/read/say words backwards. None of this makes her weird, just unique and something that she will have to practice and work on. Just like a pianist has to practice scales lots of times, she may have to work just as hard at reading. All the notes are there, she just has to practice them so they come out right. Hope this helps.
