Why did my dentist give me a prescription for Oxycodone and Penicillin before he removes my wisdom teeth?
Oxycodone is a painkiller
Penicillin is a antibiotic
I don’t understand why he would give me these drugs before and not after.

the penicillin is a prophylactic (just in case) antibiotic, so you don’t get an infection and the oxycodone is so you don’t have worry about getting it after when you are in pain. That is what they did for my hubby and me……little tip there is this thing called dry socket where the hole in your mouth doesn’t heal because it has food in it I had two on the bottom and they are the most painful thing ever if you get it they stick….no painfully shove this disgusting tasting guaze that is soak with medicine it smells bad and taste even worse…..anyway the way not to have this happen to you is not to eat anything that would get stuck in there you will be starving and want food so bad after just liquids for a few days but make sure you resist because you do not want to get dry socket….go shopping the day before and get broth and if you have someone to take care of you that would be great they can go get you smoothies with some protein in it….follow their directions about cleaning the area to the “T” and you should be fine….oh and take the pain meds right when you get home so that when the numbing stuff wears off you won’t feel to bad the pills he gave you are probably for every 4 hours take them every 3 hours and 45 mins so that one stops working the other starts make sure you drink a smoothie or something so you don’t throw up the meds b/c will already probably be nausea from the anesthesia …..ummm what else keep the ice on there even though it will be uncomfortable it will make the swelling go down and the less swelling the less pain………that’s all the adivce I have take care and I hope everything goes well.

if you are in pain from your wisdom teeth , then there is most likely an infection present and its a good idead to treat this before the surgery because removing an infected tooth might allow the infection to get into the blood stream.
my mother has a heart murmur and there is always the chance tht infection will get into her heart from her teeth, so she always has to take pennicillin before dental work. and the painkiller is because on the day of the surgery, you wont feel like standing in line waiting on your prescription to be filled.
i cant understand why you didnt just ask him, hey when should i start taking these? -

They give it to you before so you can fill it NOW and have it ready at home for when you come home after surgery. You need to take the penicillin and maybe the oxy if you are in a lot of pain (take only half a pill because it is strong pain pills). So fill it a day or two before the surgery and have it at home for when you return home.
