“Peri” is Latin for around the time of “X.” So, perimenopause means around the time of menopause, which includes: just before menopause, menopause and shortly after menopause. Different women go through menopause at different ages but it is safe to say that it occurs predominately in the late 40′s to the mid-50′s.
As menopause approaches, there are very characteristic changes in the levels of certain hormones, such as Follicular Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Lutenizing Hormone (LH). Oftentimes, the changes causes mood changes in the woman. This is the time just before menopause. Menopause is marked by the absence of mense (i.e. no longer menstruating). Once the hormone levels stabilizes and the woman stops ovulating then this is the just after menopause period.

Current studies show that in retrospect, perimenopausal symptoms often begin in the mid 30s. I varies highly with the individual. I have known some women that went through menopause in their late 20s or early 30s. Mine began six years ago, and despite hysterectomy earlier this year, the hot flashes have not gone away, but the mood swings are definitely a thing of the past, my husband is glad to say.

Perimenopause is the period of about ten years prior to actual menopause (defined as the time you have gone one year without a period). During this time, your hormones fluctuate, your period starts to become less regular or changes, and you may undergo other symptoms indicating menopause is approaching. It ends with menopause itself.
