Alzheimer’s Disease – ‘The Living Death’

0

Alzheimer’s disease or the ‘living death’ was named after Dr Alois Alzheimer who discovered it in 1907, when he described the amazing effects the disease had on the brain of a 51 year old woman who had apparently died of dementia.

When examined under a microscope, her brain showed changes that had never been seen before.

While in some parts there was a clumping of brain matter in other parts it was tangled together.

When his research discovered the same twisting and deformations in other patients who died of similar causes the condition carried his name and became known as Alzheimer’s disease.

However, his research coincidentally concentrated on younger patients so at first this produced a false impression that Alzeimer’s disease only affected the young, with older sufferers being falsely diagnosed with pre-senile dementia or senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT).

Now we know that the reverse is actually true and that Alzheimer’s, with its distinctive brain abnormalities, is much more common in older patients than on the young.

This initial confusion has complicated matters enormously because now the whole group of conditions are all known as Alzheimer’s disease.

The Royal College of Physicians describes Alzheimer’s disease as follows . . .
“Dementia is the global impairment of higher functions, including memory, the capacity to solve the problems of day to day living, the performance of learned perceptuo-motor skills (our learned responses such as washing, dressing and eating), the correct use of social skills, and the control of emotional reactions in the absence of gross clouding of consciousness. ”

This definition can’t possibly convey the complex symptoms and distress that characterise this condition.

Those who personally know and love someone who suffers from it describe the gradual loss of memory, impaired judgement and changes in behaviour and temperament as ‘a living death’.

Some blood pressure drugs may cut risk of dementia

0

Researchers from Boston found that older people taking a certain type of blood pressure medication known as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) were significantly less likely to develop the brain-wasting illnesses.

Dementia affects some 35 million people around the world and the number of cases — and their impact on health policy and the economic and social costs of healthcare — is set to grow dramatically as populations age.

Despite decades of research, doctors still have few effective weapons against dementia and experts commenting on the latest study said it could have major implications.

Alzheimer’s Disease International predicts the number of dementia sufferers globally will almost double every 20 years — to 66 million in 2030 and more than 115 million in 2050 — with much of the rise coming in poorer nations.

The study, led by Benjamin Wolozin from Boston University School of Medicine, looked at the incidence of dementia in 800,000 mostly male patients in the United States from 2002 to 2006. They all had heart disease and were 65 or older.

One group was using ARBs, another was taking a different type of the blood pressure lowering drug, an ACE inhibitor called lisinopril, and a third was on other heart medications.

The results, published in the British Medical Journal, show that those taking ARBs were significantly less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, Wolozin said.

High blood pressure is a known risk factor for vascular dementia, where brain function is damaged by a series of small strokes.

Diovan, or valsartan, made by Swiss drug firm Novartis, and Atacand, or candesartan, made by the Anglo-Swedish firm AstraZeneca, are two of the biggest selling ARB medicines.

The team also found that ARBs have an added effect when combined with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors in patients who had already developed Alzheimer’s or dementia. Those taking both drugs were less likely to die early or be admitted to nursing homes.

“The public health implications of finding an effective way of preventing dementia are immense,” said Colleen Maxwell and David Hogan, experts in geriatric medicine at the University of Calgary, Canada, who wrote a commentary on the study.

But they said further work was needed to verify whether blood pressure drugs, and ARBs in particular, could help.

Previous studies have suggested that taking steps to stave off heart disease and diabetes may also improve the chances of avoiding dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Research found that people who take cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins have a lower risk of developing all forms of dementia. And diabetics who take pills that help their bodies use insulin better have a lower risk of Alzheimer’s.

The Elderly – Can Gerry Robinson Fix Dementia Care Homes? – Preview BBC Two

14

More About This Programme: www. bbc. co. uk Businessman Sir Gerry Robinson returns in a new series in which he tries to turn around three struggling care homes. In the next twenty years over a million Britons will have dementia, and sufferers are likely to end up in one of the country’s privately run care homes. It’s a huge business worth six billion pounds, largely paid for by taxation, yet a great deal of the care is woefully inadequate. Can Gerry, whose father had the disease when he died, change a culture of stagnant lounges, a lack of specialist training among staff, and a focus on keeping people alive rather than helping them to live a happy life?

Staying Fit and Healthy With Mobile Phones

0

These days with obesity and health problems dogging us all we are keeping our eyes out for potential ways to help keep us well. Some mobile phones are catering for this mindset with applications and new features that can help us achieve our goals. Some plans recently detailed show ways in which our mobile phones could potentially save lives too.

A recent patent filing arrived at the FCC in America proposing mobile phones that have portable defibrillators built in them. Two buttons on the phone would act as the paddles we see doctors on TV shows like ER and Casualty sticking to the chests of people under cardiac arrest. So what is the reasoning behind this patent filing? Well the patent describes how 400,000 Americans die every year from Sudden Cardiac Death, it then follows with the rather straight forward thought that if more of us were carrying portable defibrillators on our person then the mortality rate would be much reduced.

Whilst this may be another patent filing never to come to fruition there are plenty of ways a mobile phone can be used to exercise and help prevent heart problems that would need a defibrillator in the first place. Many people who go running or jogging like to do so to music and mobile phones are perfect for this with many of them moonlighting as MP3 players with the added safety of if you twist your ankle or injure yourself miles from home you can call for help!

A more recent addition to some mobile phones is Global Positioning Systems (GPS) which allow you to find your way home if you’ve been a bit overzealous going for a bike ride and got yourself lost. Some mobile phone positioning software caters specifically if you were on foot and not in a car, obviously aimed squarely at joggers and cyclists who need to track where they’re going.

Ever since the Apple iPhone and SonyEricsson K850i motion sensing technology has become the next big thing with mobile phones, not only detecting whether the phone is being held at a certain angle but being able to detect movements such as steps taken. Nokia have released a program for their phones called a Sport’s tracker, working in tandem with the GPS receiver it allows you to plan exercise routes, count steps like a pedometer would and report back how many of those extra calories you’ve burnt off.

They aren’t the only ones too, Japanese mobile supremo NTT DoCoMo has worked with Mitsubishi on what they are calling the “wellness mobile phone” which can measure body fat ratio, pulse and bizarrely breath odour! Whilst it was only shown off at a trade fair last year the Japanese company expects to one day release the device commercially.

So there you have it, mobile phones have dominated so many other fields of electronics (digital cameras, email, GPS) they now seem poised to keep tabs on our health be it subtle methods like planning routes to restarting hearts, this is clearly a subject to keep a close eye on.
