High Blood Pressure Leads to Dementia?

0

In the August 25th, 2009 issue of Neurology, the official journal of the American Academy of Neurology, the results of a recent study found an association between high blood pressure and reduced mental abilities.

Dr. Georgios Tsivgoulis, the neurologist who compiled the data and spends his time between Greece and the University of Alabama, believes more research is needed to confirm the findings. He states, “It is possible that by preventing or treating high blood pressure, we could potentially prevent cognitive impairment, which can be a precursor to dementia. The world’s aging population is forecast to see an increase in dementia cases for 100 million people by the year 2050. Deputy director of the U. S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Dr. Walter J. Koroshetz, agrees with Dr. Tsivgoulis’s statement. He states that the National Institute of Health will organize a large clinical trial to further evaluate the association between lowering blood pressure and health issues including cognitive decline. Whether you are young or older, if lowering high blood pressure can keep your mind sharp and prevent dementia, here are a few ways you can do so without medication. 1) Drink plenty of pure, unadulterated water. Chronic dehydration is often the cause of high blood pressure. 2) Avoid sodium chloride, sodium, and table salt which can raise blood pressure. If needed, use ocean-sea salt (often called Himalayan or Celtic) which has important minerals and elements unlike sodium chloride. 3) Eliminate stress from your life. 4) Exercise regularly as any physical workout gets your heart pumping and endorphins (stress-busters) flowing. 5) Train your mind to become less responsive to stress through meditation, yoga, visualization and deep breathing. The incentive for these steps is great, now that you know healthy normal blood pressure is vital to protecting your mind.

Curcumin and Alzheimer’s Prevention is a Step Closer

0

There has been considerable excitement in the scientific community in recent years after results of curcumin and Alzheimers studies showed how it could potentially slow down and even reverse the symptoms.

Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric root, has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and it is in part due to these that it can help. A number of recent studies from the University of California and other institutions indicate that it improves the cognitive abilities of patients with Alzheimers disease.

It appears that it can help to boost the immune system and in doing so help to clear out amyloid protein. Amyloid protein makes up the plaque, a substance that accumulates in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease and is a big factor in the development of the disease, showing how curcumin and Alzheimers prevention are interlinked.

Due to its anti-inflammatory qualities, it can help to reduce inflammation in the brain, more effectively than ibuprofen, and help keep the neural pathways clear. This has the effect of improving memory, an everyday benefit we can all enjoy along with more resistance to common cold and the flu.

It has long been used in India in food and for medicine, and they have the lowest incidence in the world of dementia, like Alzheimers and Parkinson’s disease, and it is believed the high use of turmeric is responsible.

Curcumin and Alzheimers is not the only issue it can deal with as it has been shown to fight cancer, protect the heart and lower the bad cholesterol levels. Quite an achievement for one substance!

You can include curcumin in your daily routine by taking it in a high quality nutritional supplement, as it is not easily absorbed into the body naturally. When combined with other natural nutrients it powers are enhanced even further plus you get the benefit of all the other ingredients.

Just make sure it is 98% pure extract and that piperine from black pepper is present as this dramatically increases the absorption, and therefore the benefits to you.

Curcumin and alzheimers prevention is just the beginning and with over half of us expected to get some form of dementia, what better way to help prevent these terrible diseases striking in the future, while enjoying great health in the present.

Visit my website today if you would like to learn more about the synergistic health supplements which I personally take, including curcumin.

Words From a Great Network Marketer

0

Here are some words from a professional network marketer.

Tonight I’ve listened to a great speaker.

John Stettler came to Stockholm, Sweden for

leadership training. It was so good!

He brought two companions as well. One is a senior marketing director and the other also a marketing director. They are in charge of the Nordic countries and Uk and Germany.

They told us of what is happening in general with the company, Xango. Also about the business of network marketing. It is booming. Both Xango and networking business. It is a great timing to be there.

Do you know that in US of all the business revenue 50% is coming from home based/small business?

Turnover in US of network marketing business is $30 billion and in the whole world is $ 100 billion! It’s amazing and it is growing. The new signed up per week are now up to 475000 persons around the world.

Good quotes for tonight I also picked up.

Like, if you never give up- it is never over!

It is not lost- you have not just found it!

Thank God for education and training.

It is so important for you, yourself. Good to refill you with motivation, enthusiasm and more knowledge.

Spread it to your down line as well.

What is a leader?

The leader holds the belief of the team, in the company and in the individual person.

Leaders stay in action in daily activities and continue recruiting. Why? Like all big companies that are looking for new blood in the organization to create strength.

New people are the life plug. They are the most excited people in the business. They bring in new dreams.

What else do leaders do?

The speed of the leader determines the speed of the pack.

So are you a leader set the pace!

Focus on the leading edge where the newly recruited are placed. The leaders communicate to both up lines and down lines. You ask for information upwards and support and motivate downwards.

Finally when you pitch a prospect think in F O R M.

F= family, how do they want to bring up the kids, spouse future?

O= occupation, are you satisfied with your job?

R= how would you like to spend your holidays?

M= bring the message to them. Show them the opportunity.

Everybody has dreams, talk about lifestyle and be enthusiastic.

Go and get them!

Activities For Alzheimer’s And Dementia Patients

0

I believe activities are crucial to well-being. In the past ten years, research has shown that activities play a large part in preventing the progression of dementia. We also know that socializing prevents loneliness, despair and suicidal thoughts. For several years I led recreational activities on weekends at a geri-psych hospital. The activities that took place on any particular weekend greatly depended on the patients in the unit at that time. All of the patients there had dementia and behavior disorders that precluded their being able to remain at home until the behavior had been extinguished. Most patients were on the unit between three to four weeks, while the doctors changed their drugs or the dosages. Some were more alert; others were more physically functional. Some returned home; others returned to a nursing home or entered a long-term care facility for the first time after discharge. There are many activities that are appropriate for people with dementia. The only guideline is to not degrade them by having them do children’s activities. Instead, show your respect by engaging them in pastimes that are similar to children’s activities but suitable for an adult, retaining whatever qualities that make the activity fun. Here are some suggestions for caregivers who have a dementia patient at home. Puzzles & GamesTry:Easy crosswords and word searches that use large type. Jigsaw puzzles with very large pieces. The images shouldn’t be child-oriented; try scenery or pictures of animals instead. Floor puzzles are good because they typically have large pieces, and there aren’t too many, which can be discouraging. Work on these on a table so you don’t have to struggle getting off the floor!Old favorites like dominoes, card games such as “Go Fish” or “Old Maid” and board games like Candyland and Pollyanna. Reminiscing, a board game available through SeniorStore. com, which prompts memories of assorted events and fads from 1939 on. Photo & Scrapbooking ActivitiesSort photos by topic, subject, type or date. Mix them up after you finish so they can be sorted in a different way next time. Assemble a photo collage. Pasting can be fun. Make a scrapbook, pasting photos onto the pages and writing notes about the memory beside the photo. You can also use a photo album with plastic sleeves. Label old family photos so you’ll have that information later on. Reminisce about the focus of the photo. Reading ActivitiesRead out loud or simply look through books and magazines that can lead to discussions. Try:Reminisce Magazine. Picture books like Bradley Trevor Greive’s The Blue Day Book and Shel Silverstein’s A Light in the Attic and The Giving Tree. Old copies of Look or Life magazines. The Bible or Bible stories. Short story collections, such as Chicken Soup for the Soul. Steven Kellogg’s The Day Jimmy’s Boa ate the Wash and Jimmy’s Boa Bounces Back. When I am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple, edited by Sandra Martz. Dr. Seuss’ You’re Only Old Once: A Book for Obsolete Children. John Wagner’s Maxine: Yelling it Like It Is: A Fine Whine with the Queen of Attitude. Judith Viorst’s Forever Fifty and Other Negotiations and Suddenly Sixty and Other Shocks of Later Life. Reminiscing with Memory BooksYou can find blank memory books in the baby section of a bookstore. These usually pose questions that will prompt discussion. Here are a few suggestions:Grandmother’s Memories: To Her Grandchild by Candy Paul, illustrated by Thomas Kinkade. Grandfather Remembers: Memories for my Grandchild by Judith Levy. Grandmother’s Scrapbook illustrated by Judy Pelikan. Grandmother Remembers Songbook: Heirloom Songs for My Grandchild by Judith Levy and Judy Pelikan. Activities Involving HumorWatch or listen to comedy TV shows, movies and old radio shows like “Who’s on first” (Abbott and Costello) and “I Love Lucy. “Start a humor notebook or scrapbook. Laugh over funny family memories (like the time Mom put frozen rolls on the Thanksgiving table). HouseworkRake leaves. Fold towels. Clean windows. Cut coupons. Gardening ActivitiesPull weeds. Plant annuals in spring and bulbs in the fall. Transplant small plants into larger pots. Have the patient paint pots ahead of time and use these for gifts. Seasonal DecoratingString cranberries or popcorn. Make door wreaths and window decorations. Put up decorations and take them down. Sorting & Organizing ActivitiesSort or organize:Nails, screws and other hardware. Nail polish and lipsticks, sorting by color, brand or on a scale of 1–10, in order of preference. Buttons, using muffin tins to sort by color, size or style. Coins, according to date, value or place of origin. The pantry, arranging cans and jars by size, brand or contents. The silverware drawer, rearranging the order of the forks, spoons and knives. Playing cards into decks that match, or into suits within a deck, or by numbers. Tupperware by size or color. M&Ms, using muffin tins to sort them by color. Choose one color to eat!Cooking & Activities in the KitchenMake salads, ice cream, Jell-O, pudding (try a hand mixer), no-bake cookies and pies, popcorn balls and other simple recipes. Wash fresh produce and put it into bags. Grind nuts to use for baking. Peel vegetables. Copy recipes from magazines onto cards. Make a grocery list of items needed for recipes. Sort recipes and find pictures to illustrate them. Empty the dishwasher (use melamine or plastic dinnerware). Set the table. Fold or roll silverware into napkins. Assemble shish-kabobs with fruit or vegetables (use wooden ones with blunt ends). Shell nuts or peas.

Being Prepared With First Aid Equipment

0

In certain work environments – and sometimes at home – it is necessary to have first aid equipment that goes beyond the simple gauze, Bandaids, and antibiotic cream kept in most elementary first aid kits. In some situations, comprehensive first aid equipment is essential to maintaining a safe and prepared environment. Having this first aid equipment – and knowing how to operate it properly – can be mean the difference between life and death.
One such piece of first aid equipment that has garnered quite a bit of press recently is the portable automated external defibrillator. When someone’s heart stops beating, the external defibrillator transmits electric waves through paddles in order to restart the normal rhythms of the heart. This is a serious piece of first aid equipment and should only be used by someone who is well trained in doing so.
However, because of the effectiveness of the external defibrillator, it is now being installed on airplanes, in schools, and even in offices. Specific people in these environments are being trained on how to use this piece of first aid equipment in the hopes that it can save a life in an otherwise perilous situation.
Another important component of first aid equipment is a litter – a small, easily collapsible canvas canvas stretcher of sorts. It is used to help remove a victim from a dangerous situation or to take someone closer to a place where rescue workers can reach them.
A tourniquet is another imperative piece of first aid equipment – used to temporarily stop the bleeding of severe injuries until emergency services can arrive.
Additionally, first aid equipment also includes protective gear for those administering the first aid. Goggles, a compact and disposable mouth-to-mouth resuscitation device that allows for sterile administering of rescue breaths, and rubber gloves are all a part of first aid equipment.
The goal of first aid equipment in the work, school, or home environment is to assess life threatening injuries and stabilize victims until professional emergency medical assistance can arrive. But this first line of defense – when used correctly – can often save a victim’s life.

MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE (MND) is the name given to a group of related diseases affecting the motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurones are those nerve cells that control muscles, and their degeneration leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing.

The disease course is generally aggressive, with 50% of patients surviving less than 3 years after the diagnosis. Approximately 20% of patients can survive for 5-10 years but the rate of progression varies greatly from one person to another.

There are different types of MND, each affecting people in different ways.

1. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): presents with a combination of upper motor neuron and lower motor neuron signs in the limbs. 2. Progressive bulbar palsy (PBP): presents with speech and swallowing difficulties. As the disease progresses, limb and cognitive features develop.

3. Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA): less common than other forms of MND that presents with only upper motor neuron involvement.

4. Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS): presents with only lower motor neuron signs and is a rare neuromuscular disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness in the voluntary muscles.

5. Pseudobulbar palsy: is bilateral impairment of the function of the lower cranial nerves 9, 10, 11 and 12 which control the muscles of eating, swallowing and talking.

Liposuction – A Consumer’s Guide

0

Are you feeling down and out? Do you feel even worse when you look in the mirror? Cosmetic surgeons tell us you are not alone. They say the popularity of reality television shows like ABC TV’s “Extreme Makeover” has led to an increasing boom in cosmetic surgery. You may be one of the many people who are not happy with the way you look. Look in the mirror right now and tell me what you see. Do you see flabby thighs, a sagging chin or a tubby tummy? If so, then liposuction could be just what the doctor ordered.

What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is also known in the medical arena as lipoplasty or liposculture or “lipo” for short. Lipo surgically removes excess fat from deposits beneath the skin in many areas of the body. The procedure sounds like it hurts.

How Does It Work?
Surgeons use a hollow stainless steel tube called a cannula. The cannula is hooked up to a vacuum. It is inserted into an incision in the skin. Fat deposits are then gently sucked out of the body.

Does It Hurt?
“It didn’t hurt at all,” says 25-Year old Jenn Rogers. Rogers is the mother of three year old twins. She decided to have lipo to get her post baby abdomen back. She says, “I tried so hard through exercise and diet to do it. But, nothing I tried would work. ”
Is It Popular And If It Is, Why?

Liposuction is quickly becoming one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery for that very reason. It targets the areas of fat we’d like to shoot away. It is commonly used to reduce fat in the abdomen, hips, butt, thighs, chin, neck, back, chest and arms. Can you believe that doctors also use lipo on the knees, ankles and calves? As you can see, liposuction will work on just about anywhere you see fat and want to hide it!

It sounds like it hurts, doesn’t it?

Well, the amount of pain depends on individual circumstances. Liposuction can be achieved painlessly by local or general anesthesia. However doctors consider liposuction a mild surgical procedure. It is performed using a general or local anesthesia. A heavy IV sedation is also used in some cases. Recent advances have done a lot to ease the pain. Doctors can now precisely target fat areas which help to reduce recovery times. Despite the recent popularity, lipo has actually been around for more than a decade.
“I had my first liposuction in 1992. It was before anyone even knew about it. I wanted to reduce the signs of aging in my face,” says retired school teacher, 69 Year Old Rebecca Long. The grandmother of three has had three additional procedures since then. She laughs, “People now confuse my daughter with being my sister. I don’t know if that’s good for her, or bad!”

How Do I Make A Decison?
You may be wondering whether liposuction is for you. Some folks figure if they have the greenbacks then they can do it. But, whether you have the money to pay for it is just one of the factors you should consider. It is important that a surgeon be board certified for the technique that they are going to use. You’ll want to look at his or her experience and safety record.

Are There Risks?
Liposuction is not risk free. There are many things that can go wrong. Complications can occur due to a poor judgment on the part of the doctor. The better educated you are on the procedure, the greater you chances of spotting a problem before it occurs. You should be concerned about disfiguring skin irregularities that can occur if the surgeon tries to take too much fat away in one procedure. The use of a large cannula can also affect the outcome of your procedure.

Large cannula’s remove fat quickly. However, they are more likely to lead to skin irregularities then small cannulas do. Small cannulas are less than 3 millimeters in diameter. There’s a strong chance you’ll need a large cannula depending on the amount of fat you need taken away.

Surgeons use the small cannula’s during the Tumescent Procedure. The American Medical Association says this technique when used with local anesthesia is the safest. Under this method, the diluted local anesthesia lasts for hours reducing the need for narcotic pain relief. Doctors say there have been no reported deaths under this procedure. In addition, even if it’s used with general anesthesia, Tumescent Procedure is safe if there’s no large fat removal.
There is another surgical method that utilizes a modified version of the Tumescent Procedure. This modified version combines local anesthesia with general anesthesia or IV sedation. General anesthesia and IV sedation may be dangerous when used alone, just imagine the danger when they’re put together. As a result, an anesthesiologist must be on hand to handle the administration.

You’ll also want to make sure that you don’t have any other surgical procedures the same day as your liposuction. You’ll want to avoid long term exposure to anesthesia because it’s dangerous. Taking away a large amount of fat can lead to serious complications. Also, removing an excessive amount from too many areas can also be dangerous. You’ll also want to make sure that you don’t have any other surgical procedures the same day as your liposuction. Healing can occur quickly thanks to all the advances in liposuction.

Liposuction recovery times are shorter today than a couple of decades ago. You can return to a normal lifestyle within four after surgery with most procedures. However, a little bit of local anesthetic remains in your system. It is later absorbed into the blood stream. Would you believe that draining the anesthetic solution out of your incision actually speeds your rate of healing? It also reduces swelling and bruising after surgery.

Drainage is also speeded up by leaving the incisions open instead of closing with sutures. Your surgeon can also make tiny holes in your skin to force drainage. Your surgeon may also encourage you to spandex clothes to promote more drainage. Your surgeon can also drain it through absorptive pads that are placed over your incisions. Despite the surgical concerns, liposuction is changing lives like Jenn and Rebecca’s. It can improve body posture and image ultimately leading to a happier, healthier, you.
