Herpes Zoster (shingles) is a secondary infection resulting from Varicella (chicken pox). Varicella lives in the nerve cells of its host after it has run its course (in early childhood). When the person’s immune system is down the virus moves along the nerve cell and causes the skin eruptions seen in the video. There are vaccines for varicella and for herpes zoster. Both diseases are not contagious once lesions have crusted over.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (known as HSV-1, cold sore, or fever blister) is a different virus that results in lesions on the mouth, lips, or eyes. It is transmitted by infected saliva (spit). If you have a cold sore, don’t kiss other people, share eating utensils or toothbrushes, or engage in oral sex. HSV-1 lives in the nerve cells of the host body, and reactivates when the person is under stress or sick. There is no cure or vaccine for HSV-1.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2 or genital herpes) is a third virus that results in lesions on the genital area. It is usually transmitted by sexual contact. Practise safe sex! Communicate with your sexual partner about STDs, know their health status, use condoms, and be responsible. HSV-2 can be transmitted when there are no symptoms or visible sores. HSV-2 lives in the nerve cells of the host and can reactivate at any time. There is no cure or vaccine for Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2.
