Has anyone experienced urinary incontinence from a dog after hysterectomy?
If so, how long did it last and how was it treated?
The vet said that it is normal after hysterectomy and that there may be a little discharge. She is recovering very well and the vet is very pleased with her progress. I was just hoping to hear other peoples experiences as I’ve hear the incontinence can be permanent.

It happened with one of my huskies. She was spayed at 10 years old and the incontinence started a couple months later. It was treated with a synthetic estrogen hormone called DES, one tablet every three days. That wasn’t enough so the vet prescribed 50 mg phenylpropanolamine 3 times a day. It took a little experimenting to come up with the right dose. Once we got it right she was fine for her last four years.

Yes, urinary incontinence is so common after a hysterectomy that it is commonly known as “spay incontinence”. The rates of urinary incontinence in different studies vary from 4 to 20% for spayed females compared to 0.3% for unspayed females. It is treatable with medication usually for the life of the dog.

I have a greyhound that was spayed after she came off the track. That was a year and a half ago. She had incontinence when we got her a month after she was spayed. She is on medication for this now. We tried to get her off of it by decreasing the dosage, but it didn’t work. She will be taking the pills for the rest of her life. It is two pills per day and we have a regular routine to take them. She is just fine. Your veterinarian can help you with it.
